Sam Young was a top 10 recruit in the nation out of high school and was one of the sure picks to be a first rounder. He never quite came through on that promise, but he's got a lot of good tools to work with.
First thing you see with him is his size (6'7 318 lbs) and his pedigree. An All-American in high school and a 50 game starter for the Fighting Irish (school record). Those 50 starts are a franchise record and as a high school player he was named the Gatorade Player of the year in Florida. He won that award over 2 first rounders from this weekend Tim Tebow and CJ Spiller.
He's got versatility in the sense that he's started at both left and right tackle. He's probably more of a right tackle at the pro level though. He is a mauler in the run game and a deccent pass blocker. He's a tough, hard worker, who's proven to be durable.
The knock on Young is that he's not a great athlete, he has heavey feet, and that causes him to be beat by speed rushers. At this point he's a better developmental prospect than someone like Pat McQuistian. The Cowboys will just have to get him in and see what he can do for them. At this point he was probably the best tackle they could take other than Selvish Capers who I still haven't seen go off the board.
