Dez Bryant Profile

The question for weeks was whether or not Dez Bryant would be there when the Cowboys picked and if they would take him.  During our draft chat last night, I was asked what the odds were he would fall about mid-way through the first round and if the Cowboys would take him.  I said, that it looked like he was falling and word out of valley ranch was that if he was there he would be the pick.  Shockingly I've seen a lot of mixed reactions to this pick, but there's alot to love about it.

Let's start first with what it took to get Bryant.  There was a  lot of wheeling and dealing last night, and the Cowboys found a dance partner with New England.  The Cowboys knew they had to get in front of Baltimore, and swapped the 27th pick for the 24th pick.  The Cowboys also gave up a 3rd rounder but picked up a 4th rounder.  So in summary, they moved up 3 spots in one round and moved down into the 4th to the 119th pick.  That's really not that bad of a deal and now they have another 4th rounder if they want to move back into the third.  Now, onto Bryant as a player.

He's a lifelong Texas kid coming from high school powerhouse Lufkin, and went on to be a star at Oklahoma State.  In what amounted to be about 2 seasons (one of which was his first year on campus), Bryant collected 147 receptions for 2,425 yards and 29 Touchdowns.  He's also an incredible return guy who gives the Cowboys another dimension in that area too.  He's been a First team Freshman All-American, First team all Big XII several times, and a 2008 First Team All American.

Bottom line, this guy is every bit as good as Michael Crabtree last year, and you just got him at an incredibly premium price.  There's not a whole lot not to like about this.  There are some character concerns, but let me say that I'm not worried.  Is he a bad kid?  No I don't think so.  Is he a bit of a knucklehead?  Yeah and he just needs to grow up a little bit.

This could spell the end for Roy Williams, but we'll figure all that out later.  Today the Cowboys have one pick at 59 and as of right now do not have a third rounder, but things could change.  Be sure to check back here for the latest news and updates on all the Cowboys picks throughout the weekend.
