The exact number of teams really doing their homework on Cam Newton seems to be in flux, but suffice to say there is plenty of interest in the Auburn quarterback.

On Thursday, it was reported nine teams will conduct private workouts with the Heisman Trophy winner.

Today, the number is at eight, all teams in the top half of the first round.

Don’t be surprised if the Dallas Cowboys expand the current list by one. According to an NFL source, Newton could very well work out for Jerry Jones and Co. The Cowboys publicly have said all the right things about their veteran starter Tony Romo, but they hold the No. 9 pick in the draft and it could be a matter of the team wanting to perform due diligence.

As the Dallas Morning News noted, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett was not one of five head coaches present at the Auburn pro day Tuesday. Newton did meet with the Cowboys at the Scouting Combine last month in Indianapolis. Owner Jerry Jones loves to make a splash and there isn’t another player in this year’s draft that could make waves like Newton. If the Cowboys believe Newton needs a year or two to make the transition from the spread offense to a pro system, why not have him work behind Romo?

Today, NFL.com listed Carolina, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Tennessee, Miami, Washington and Minnesota as the teams Newton will have workouts for in the coming weeks. On Thursday, Arizona and Seattle were mentioned by Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer as teams that could be in the Newton sweepstakes. Look for the Cowboys to possibly get involved.
