To be quite honest, the New York Jets aren't going to make the noise they want to make in the AFC until they get better and more consistent play at the quarterback position.
That was clearly evident Sunday night as Jets QB Mark Sanchez almost single-handedly gave the Baltimore Ravens a 34-17 victory, losing a pair of fumbles that were returned for scores and also throwing a pick-six in the direction of Ravens cornerback Lardarius Webb. Steve Serby of the New York Post chronicles Sanchez's poor performance from Sunday night.
And it's an issue that isn't going away for the Jets or any number of teams struggling at quarterback. The NFL has evolved into a quarterback/receiver league, and no matter how good a defense is, or how good a running game is (incidentally, the Jets running game was awful Sunday night with only 38 yards), a team isn't going to win a Super Bowl with sub-par play at the most important position on the field.
It is the question that haunts the Dallas Cowboys with Tony Romo's inconsistency, and it is one the Jets are feeling as Sanchez continues to be up-and-down for a Jets team that appears to have most of the other pieces in place for a title run. Last week, Rex Ryan invited Joe Namath to sit in on team meetings after Broadway Joe was critical of the team. If Namath shows, maybe Ryan should see if Joe Willie has anything left in his arm, too.
