Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley softened his comments about Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo on Wednesday, a day after reveling in Romo's late-game meltdown against the Detroit Lions.
After Romo and the Cowboys blew a 24-point second half lead Sunday, Cooley went on a Washington radio show and said, "It's amazing—amazing—to watch him choke like that.
"The only way you're gonna give up that many points is turnovers, right? It's hilarious to watch him throw pick-sixes, too, back-to-back. I loved it."
The remarks prompted NFL analyst Boomer Esiason, a former quarterback, to call Cooley "an idiot."
Cooley subsequently went back on WJFK-FM and said he meant no personal malice toward Romo. "There's nothing in terms of Tony Romo that I even really know," he said. "As a person, we've met. I don't really know him."
Regarding Esiason's remark, he said, "He's telling people what he thinks, and I really don't care," Cooley said.
The tight end also told SI.com, "There's no personal thing with Tony Romo. I do a radio show with Chad Dukes and LaVar Arrington every Monday, and we joke around and we have some fun, and they kind of ask me questions. People really are surprised when I just talk like a regular person, I guess. I mean, I'm a fan of the game, and I'm a guy that cheers for the Redskins.
"I still enjoyed that the Cowboys lost. I play for the Washington Redskins. I don't see why anyone would think that I wouldn't enjoy that."
