Dallas Cowboys punter Mat McBriar underwent successful surgery to remove a cyst from his left leg that created problems for his plant foot this past season.
McBriar, a Pro Bowl performer, had an intraneural cyst removed from the leg at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., according to the Dallas Morning News.
“The intraneural cyst was causing Mat's foot drop. The surgery to remove the cyst was targeted, based on the most current understanding of the condition and its formation," May Clinic neurosurgeon Robert Spinner, M.D., told the Morning News. He is considered the leading expert on the subject. “Mat's surgery went extremely well, and I believe he will be as good a punter as ever.”
It’s a rare condition McBriar had but he is expected to recover fully and relatively quickly. He is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent and his first choice is to remain with the Cowboys. His best season came in 2006 when he averaged 48.2 yards per punt, the fifth-highest figure in NFL history.
