The Dallas Cowboys have an important game coming up with division rivals Philadelphia. With Dallas one game ahead of the Eagles in the NFC East and only one game back from New York for the division lead, this is a game Dallas needs to win. However, how will they fare against Michael Vick?
Their Last Meeting
The last time Dallas played Philadelphia was Dec. 12, 2010. The Cowboys were reeling and came into the game with a losing record, only four wins on the season. The Eagles won the game, but it was not an easy one, taking the victory, 30-27. The difference in the game was LeSean McCoy, who ran for 149 yards, and DeSean Jackson, who caught four passes for 201 yards. Outside of the Jackson yards, Vick only accounted for 69 more yards passing in the game and only ran for 16 yards.
Philadelphia's 2011 Season
This year, the Eagles were supposed to be a great team. However, they enter the game with a 2-4 record. Despite the losing record, their problems are not on offense, but defense. On offense, the Eagles rank No. 1 in the NFL in rushing yards and No. 8 in passing yards. Vick has only two games over 300 yards passing this season and has thrown fewer than 200 on two occasions. He has nine touchdowns and eight interceptions. LeSean McCoy is tearing it up again this season, with three games over 100 yards and six touchdowns. Jackson has had three good games this season, with his only great one against San Francisco.
Dallas' 2011 Season
The Dallas Cowboys come into the game ranked No. 14 defensively against the pass and No. 1 against the run. Steven Jackson ran for 70 yards against Dallas on Oct. 23 but no other player has run for more than 50 against them. Mark Sanchez, in the opening game of the season, is the only quarterback to throw for more than 300 yards against this Cowboys defense. Sean Lee leads the team with 51 tackles and three interceptions. DeMarcus Ware has eight sacks on the season, good for second in the NFL.
The Match Up
This is not the same Dallas Cowboys team that faced Philadelphia last season and that Cowboys team almost beat them. Vick has not been playing as well as he did in 2010 and his interceptions are up. With Ware coming from all sides and Lee set up ready to pick off any pass thrown his way, Vick will have some trouble. However, the big match up in this game is the No. 1 ranked rushing offense against the No. 1 ranked rushing defense in the NFL. I see this as being in Dallas' favor, Rob Ryan shutting down the Eagles running game and helping Dallas take this important victory.
Author Shawn S. Lealos has followed the Dallas Cowboys since he was a child, his favorite players range from Roger Staubach and Tony Dorsett to the Triplets of the 90s. Through the great years of the '90s and the hard times of the '80s, Shawn never turned his back on America's Team.
