The Dallas Cowboys have a great chance to win the NFC East, holding their fate in their hands. However, even if they drop behind the New York Giants in the conference, they are still hanging on to a chance for a wild card opportunity. They have the same record as three other wild card contenders right now and have as good a chance as any to get one of the final two spots if all else fails. Here is a look at the wild card contenders right now in the NFC.
Chicago Bears (7-4)
Chicago still has a chance, having split their series with Detroit, but there is a good chance they fall hard with Jay Cutler out and Kyle Orton not landing in their laps. In their first game without Orton, Calbe Hanie played decent but lost to the Oakland Raiders, 20-25, to fall to 7-4 on the season. They are lucky that Detroit also lost, but with Atlanta winning, there is a logjam for the wild card spot right now in the NFC. Haine threw for 254 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions and needs to play better if he wants to help Chicago hold on to a playoff possibility.
Detroit Lions (7-4)
The Detroit Lions fell in a tough game on Thanksgiving Day to the Green Bay Packers. The loss drops them to four behind the Packers with five games remaining on the schedule. It also doesn't help that they play the Packers again on the last week of the season. Detroit has a nice schedule in front of them but need to stay healthy. Jahvid Best went on the DL and his replacement, Kevin Smith, left the Packers' game injured. Matthew Stafford continues to play strong though and will be the man who leads them to the playoffs this season.
Atlanta Falcons (7-4)
The Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints are battling for the NFC South title, but if they keep playing like they have been, one of them will surely clinch a wild card spot as well. On Nov. 27, Atlanta got the struggling Minnesota Vikings and won their seventh game of the season with a big 24-14 win. What is scary is they jumped out to a 17-0 lead before letting the Vikings come back to pull within three. It didn't matter. Matt Ryan finished with three touchdown passes and Roddy White accounted for 120 yards.
Author Shawn S. Lealos has followed the Dallas Cowboys since he was a child, his favorite players range from Roger Staubach and Tony Dorsett to the Triplets of the 90s. Through the great years of the '90s and the hard times of the '80s, Shawn never turned his back on America's Team.
