Jerry Jones has no plans to axe Jason Garrett at the end of the season.
The Dallas Cowboys owner, speaking on his weekly radio show today on KRLD-FM, said it’s not even an issue for the Cowboys. Garrett was named the interim head coach last season after Wade Phillips was ousted and Dallas is 7-6 and tied with the New York Giants atop the NFC East record-wise after losing to them Sunday night. Five the Cowboys’ six losses have come after they led in the fourth quarter.
“That’s not a question, in my mind, that is … worth responding to,” Jones said, according to the Dallas Morning News. “But the answer’s no. We’re just getting started here.”
If the Cowboys hadn’t blown their latest fourth-quarter lead against the Giants, they would own a two-game lead in the division with three games to go. Instead, they’re now in pursuit mode and they must play at New York in Week 17.
“Well, I do understand their concern and I would agree that we’ve had a difficult time this year closing out, and we’ve had some games that we should’ve, if you look back from that perspective, won,” Jones said. “I do think, though, that we’re tied for the lead and it is December. I think we have the fourth-highest rated quarterback in the NFL, passer rating, in Tony Romo. He played an outstanding game the other day. Actually, we had every opportunity to beat a well-playing Giants team the other day.
“We got another shot at them. Let’s keep our head up, get these next three ballgames and win this East, and get in the playoffs.”
Yes, go ahead and wonder what Garrett’s position will be like if the Cowboys don’t win the East and don’t reach the postseason.
