Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Mile Austin went down with another injury. It seems like Austin just can't stay healthy recently and this is another case. It is another hamstring injury, the same sort of injury that kept him out for three weeks earlier in the year. However, how bad will his loss hurt the Cowboys?
Austin began the year with 14 receptions for 233 yards and four touchdowns in the first two games of the season. In those games, Dallas went 1-1. While he was out for three weeks, Dallas went 1-1 and had their bye week. Then he returned and Dallas went 1-2, while Austin caught 12 balls for 117 yards and no scores.
It wasn't the same Miles Austin that started the season and thoughts were that he might still be slowed from the hamstring. They take a notoriously long time to heal and he seemed to be limited. Then, in Week 9 against Seattle, he hurt it again and missed half of the game. He caught two balls for 53 yards before the injury.
Add those numbers up and Dallas went 3-3 with Austin in the lineup. He caught the same amount of balls in his four games back that he did in the first two games for 63 less yards. He also hasn't gotten into the end zone since Week 2.
Dallas plays Buffalo, Washington, Miami and Arizona over the next four weeks. Even without Austin, Dallas should go 3-1 at the worst. If they beat Buffalo, I see them going 4-0 and increasing their record to 8-4. The Giants play San Francisco, Philadelphia, New Orleans and Green Bay and I can honestly see them tied with Dallas in the NFC East when the two teams play on Dec. 11.
Meanwhile, Dallas has a receiver named Laurent Robinson. Since Austin's first injury, Robinson has 24 receptions for 368 yards and two touchdowns. Since Week 3, Robinson has more touchdowns than Austin. Since Austin returned, Robinson has two less receptions than Austin for 33 more yards and two more touchdowns. Robinson is the third receiver and the fourth overall target when you account for Jason Witten.
Austin is covered over the next four games. He has not been that helpful anyway since returning. I say let him sit out for three more weeks and bring him back the week before the Giants game to get playing time. We can survive without him. We've done pretty good without his help for most the season.
Author Shawn S. Lealos has followed the Dallas Cowboys since he was a child, his favorite players range from Roger Staubach and Tony Dorsett to the Triplets of the 90s. Through the great years of the '90s and the hard times of the '80s, Shawn never turned his back on America's Team.
