The season didn't quite go the way Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones thought it would this year. Before the season started, it seemed like his team might have a chance at making it to the Super Bowl that will be played in the Cowboys' behemoth new stadium this February. Instead, his team suffered through a 6-10 season.
Jason Garrett took over as interim head coach on Nov. 8 after Wade Phillips got fired and the word from the Fort Worth Star Telegram is that he "will receive a new contract and a new title" from the Cowboys by week's end.
The paper points out that Jones will have to interview a minority candidate before he can hire Garrett in order to comply with league rules. Receivers coach Ray Sherman will get a few minutes in the interview chair.
The 44-year-old Garrett, who led the team to a 5-3 record, has one year and more than $3 million left on the offensive-coordinator contract he signed.
"I think he is better than when he came here with the Cowboys four years ago [as offensive coordinator]," Jones said, according to the paper. "I'm pleased we have had a positive experience since we made the change. It does help me look at what Jason is about."
