The Dallas Cowboys may have missed the playoffs following a disappointing 8-8 season, but a former star on the team said they are still headed in the right direction.

Ex-Cowboys wideout Michael Irvin likes the progress of the team's offensive line, in particular.

"This is a 1-7 team that one year later has weeded out a lot of the mess,'' Irvin told the Dallas Morning News. "Let's be real. The Leonard Davis', the (Andre) Gurodes, all of those guys, they had to go. Old ways, old style … I tell guys when you're making mistakes as an old team, that's saying I don't care.''

Irvin also said he's a believer in coach Jason Garrett, an ex-teammate of the wide receiver on the 'Boys title-winning teams.

"Jason is a football guy,'' Irvin told the paper. "I don't think there is any doubt … He traded out those old guys and got in some young guys. The offensive line can move now, they're not standing still. Marc Colombo is not an open door getting hit in the mouth.''

Behind quarterback Tony Romo, the Cowboys were seventh in the league at 262.6 passing yards per game. Their ground attack wasn't as successful at 112.9 yards per game, 18th in the NFL.

Dallas was third in the NFC East in scoring with 369 points, behind the Eagles (396) and Giants (394), but dropped its final two games of the season to miss the playoffs.
