While the Dallas Cowboys maintain their record at or below .500, many people seem to only want to talk about Tony Romo or Jason Garrett. There is a lot of talk about Dez Bryant's mouth or who should be the starting running back. Little is said about the team in a positive light when they are playing so uneven.
However, there is something big to talk about when discussing the Dallas Cowboys in a positive light. I am talking about 6-4, 260 pounds of big.
Arguably, one of the greatest players in the entire NFL plays for the Dallas Cowboys and his name is DeMarcus Ware.
In the Dallas Cowboys embarrassing loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Ware finished the game with four sacks, a forced fumble and ten tackles. While the rest of the Cowboys looked like a deer in the headlights, Ware looked like a hunter, ready to knock another deer off.
Over the first seven games of 2011, Ware has a sack in every game except the Detroit contest. He has 12 on the year and is on pace for 27. The NFL record is 22.5, set by Michael Strahan in 2001. Ware needs 11 sacks over his last nine games to break that record. Those games include contests with Seattle, Washington, Miami and Arizona and if he can pull off dual sacks in just two of those games, he would only need to average one a game for the rest of the season to break the record.
Ware is in his seventh season with the Cowboys. He has 92 sacks over his career and finished with 20 in 2008. He has already broke his season total for three of those years and needs only four more sacks to have his second best year ever. Then, it is on to chasing the record.
Rob Ryan has brought out the beast in Ware, moving him all over the field. Honestly, over the last two seasons, the Cowboys neutered Ware by placing him on the line, kneeling and ready for double coverage on every play. With him roving around the field, no one is double teaming him anymore and he is, arguably, the best defensive player in the NFL today.
While it might be easy to dismiss the entire Dallas Cowboys team lately, just remember that, on defensive side of the ball, one of the best players in football is still making his mark.
Author Shawn S. Lealos has followed the Dallas Cowboys since he was a child, his favorite players range from Roger Staubach and Tony Dorsett to the Triplets of the 90s. Through the great years of the '90s and the hard times of the '80s, Shawn never turned his back on America's Team.
