The Dallas Cowboys moved back to .500 with a win over the Seattle Seahawks but it was not the kind of win that fans wanted to see. Dallas beat Seattle 23-13 but the game didn't feel like a ten point spread.
The game was won by the Rob Ryan coached defense. I knew they would be out for blood after last week's embarrassing performance to Philadelphia. However, it wasn't the stuffing rush defense that won the game, it was the ball hawking Cowboys defenders, who finished the game with three interceptions.
Terrance Newman, Gerald Sensabaugh and Jason Hatcher all notched an interception in the game off Seattle quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, as they held him to 221 yards with no touchdowns. On the ground, Seattle was more successful, Marshawn Lynch running through holes for 135 yards and a touchdown. The Cowboys really missed the presence of Sean Lee in the middle of the field, still out with a wrist injury.
Dallas, on the other hand, struggled through the first half as well. The game went into halftime tied at six, both teams relying on their defenses to rule the game. However, Dallas put the game in the hands of rookie running back DeMarco Murray, who ran for 139 yards and caught four passes for 47 yards. When Felix Jones returns, Dallas might have a new starting running back.
Tony Romo was solid but unspectacular. He completed 19-of-31 for 279 yards and two touchdowns while also scrambling for 13 yards on the ground. He had no turnovers and that was the difference in this game. The only Dallas turnover in the game was a Dez Bryant fumble on the goal line. If not for that turnover, Dallas might have put up 30 points but it still didn't feel like that big of a win.
The first half was a struggle. The first Dallas touchdown in the second half was thanks to a big 33-yard pass to Jason Witten for a score. The second was a short field after an interception, which ended in a Laurent Robinson touchdown reception. Dan Bailey chipped in for three field goals to finish off the Dallas scoring.
In another early Sunday game, San Francisco beat Washington, to break the tie with the Cowboys. Philadelphia still has to play Chicago on Monday Night Football while the Giants play New England. The NFC East is wide open but this narrow victory is not encouraging for Cowboys' fans.
Author Shawn S. Lealos has followed the Dallas Cowboys since he was a child, his favorite players range from Roger Staubach and Tony Dorsett to the Triplets of the 90s. Through the great years of the '90s and the hard times of the '80s, Shawn never turned his back on America's Team.
