Dallas Cowboys players are planning to begin gathering in May to hold informal – and unsupervised – workouts as they do their part to stay ready during the lockout.

That’s assuming the lockout is still going on in a month, but right now there’s no reason to believe the situation will be resolved expeditiously.

Linebacker Keith Brooking told KESN-FM that one advantage the Cowboys could have – or one thing that would make it easier for them – is that a high number of players are residents of the Dallas area year-round. That takes a lot of the logistical problems away.

There are guys who have gotten together and are going to continue to get together in groups and work out and do our thing, and there will be some organized stuff going on later down the road,” Brooking said, according to the San Antonio Express-News

The players have made a pact to keep their workouts private but if they get a big number of players together, someone will see them somewhere. How much work can actually get done? New defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has a system he needs to install. The players know that.

“We have to get the mental aspect of that down,” Brooking said of the new scheme. “It's up to us (team leaders) to get with the guys and go over that and try to be as prepared as we can when the time comes (for the season).”

But without Ryan and the coaches there, the work isn’t going to get that much done.
