The Dallas Cowboys got busy reworking a handful of contracts to free up cap space for this season, a reality that returned after one uncapped season.
The most recent? The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports quarterback Tony Romo has restructured his contract. Romo was scheduled to earn a base salary of $9 million this season. Now, he’ll get $810,000 with the remaining $8.1 million now in the form of a bonus.
Per the report, the move lowers Romo’s cap hit from $12.96 million to $6.4 million, creating a savings of $6.55 million. Deals for linebacker DeMarcus Ware and wide receiver Miles Austin have also been reworked in similar fashion, and now the Cowboys have about $18 million in cap space, money that will be rolled over into 2012. It’s believed the Cowboys will be carrying more than $20 million in dead cap space next season for the many high-priced veterans they’ve run off.
