The Dallas Cowboys believe they have gotten to the root of their nearly fatal snapping problem on Monday night.
Center Phil Costa made three bad shotgun snaps – one of them on the critical third-and-21 play in the final two minutes – and was also called for an illegal snap. He got a chewing out from quarterback Tony Romo, but the Cowboys believe they know what – or who – is to blame for the problem. They’re pinning it on the Washington Redskins.
The Cowboys are claiming that Redskins defensive end Stephen Bowen, a former Cowboy, may have helped his new team in trying to get Costa to snap the ball at the wrong time.
"We've got to get the snap thing worked out," Romo said, according to ESPN Dallas. "Costa said the D-line kept calling out the snap count. We'll get that worked out. We'll tell the league and see if that's something that can be fixed because you're not supposed to be able to do that. So we'll see. But we can't have that happen. We shouldn't have been in that situation."
Calling out the snap count is illegal and can result in a 15-yard penalty – if it’s called.
