It could happen. The Dallas Cowboys failed to make the playoffs and it is no secret that many are unhappy with Rob Ryan. That alone would not make a case for Rob to head to the New York Jets. However, there is speculation that the Jets' defensive coordinator, Mike Pettine, may head to the Miami Dolphins to fill the now vacant head coaching position.
Pettine to Miami?
NFL.com News reports that Mike Pettine has drawn interest from the Miami Dolphins for the head coaching position. The Jets currently have a situation where there is so much negativity that no one wants to stay. Schottenheimer will most likely end up somewhere in Florida—be it Miami or Jacksonville.
Pettine has been criticized this year. Several games were blown by the Jets defense's inability to stop the run. The loss to Miami in the final game of the regular season was partly due to the defense. They allowed the Dolphins to run the length of the field in a 99-yard drive.
What about Ryan and Dallas?
Dallas, just like New York, should have made the playoffs. Instead, both teams choked in critical games. Rumblings of discontent with Rob Ryan are running through the Dallas camp. While Rob would like to hold out for a head coaching position, if the Cowboys fire him, he may have to settle for another DC position if he wants to remain employed.
Is New York ready for a Ryan Dynasty?
Is any team ready for Rob and Rex on the same team? If any place can handle that much personality in the coaching staff, it is New York. Both Ryans have huge media draw. If they were to be on the same team, it could be media overload for the Jets. I guess a better question would be is can a Ryan dynasty help put a very broken team back together or will it create further problems?
The thought of having the Ryan brothers as a coaching team for the Jets is an interesting idea. It would make games extremely interesting to watch, just from a sideline perspective. Rob is a good defensive coordinator and his brother Rex has his hands full with the current situation in the Jets locker room. Maybe what New York needs is a double-dose of Ryan to set things straight.
