1991 - Georgia Tech routs Nebraska 45-21 in the Citrus Bowl to finish as college football’s only unbeaten team (11-0-1).
1992 - Miami beats Nebraska 22-0 in the Orange Bowl, the first shutout of the Cornhuskers since 1973, and finishes with a 12-0 record.
1993 - No. 2 Alabama wins its first national championship in 13 years and deprives Miami of its fifth title as the Crimson Tide defense humbles the No. 1 Hurricanes 34-13 in the Sugar Bowl.
1993 - Florida State beats Nebraska 27-14 in the Orange Bowl to set an NCAA record by winning eight consecutive bowl games.
1999 - Ron Dayne rushes for 246 yards and a record-tying four touchdowns as Wisconsin beats UCLA 38-31 in the Rose Bowl.
2000 - Georgia’s Hap Hines kicks a 21-yard field goal in overtime to complete the greatest comeback in bowl history. The Bulldogs pull out a 28-25 victory over Purdue after trailing 25-0 early in the second quarter in the Outback Bowl.
2001 - South Carolina, winless in 1999, caps the most dramatic one-year turnaround in Southeastern Conference history by winning the Outback Bowl 24-7 over Ohio State and finishing with an 8-4 record.
2005 - David Greene(notes), the winningest quarterback in NCAA history with 42 victories, passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns in his last game as Georgia beats Wisconsin 24-21 in the Outback Bowl.
2006 - Seattle’s Shaun Alexander(notes) sets the NFL mark for touchdowns in a season with 28 and wins the league rushing title with 1,880 yards. He breaks Priest Holmes’ 2003 mark of 27 with a 1-yard run, the 100th touchdown of his career.
2006 - New England’s Doug Flutie converts the NFL’s first successful drop kick in 64 years during a 28-26 loss to Miami.
2007 - Bob Knight earns career victory No. 880 to tie for the Division I men’s record with former North Carolina coach Dean Smith. Knight’s Texas Tech Red Raiders blow a 20-point lead, but withstand a 3-point miss at the buzzer to beat New Mexico 70-68.
2007 - Boise State, after tying the game with 7 seconds to go in regulation, stuns No. 7 Oklahoma 43-42 in overtime to win the Fiesta Bowl. The No. 9 Broncos win on Ian Johnson’s(notes) 2-point conversion run after receiver Vinny Perretta(notes) throws a fourth-down touchdown pass to Derek Schouman(notes).
2008 - Sidney Crosby’s shootout goal gives Pittsburgh a 2-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres in the outdoor Winter Classic in front of a league-record 71,217 fans. In elements way more suited for football than hockey, Crosby wins the NHL’s second outdoor game - and first in the United States - in the most dramatic fashion at Ralph Wilson Stadium, home to the NFL’s Buffalo Bills.
2008 - Southern California beats Illinois 49-17 in the Rose Bowl. The blowout gives the Trojans 11 wins for an unprecedented sixth straight season and makes them 5-1 in their last six bowl games, all of them BCS affairs.
2009 - The Detroit Red Wings beat the Chicago Blackhawks 6-4 in the cold at Wrigley Field in the NHL’s Winter Classic. A crowd of 40,818 attend the game.
2009 - Southern California beats Penn State 38-24 to become the first team to win three consecutive Rose Bowls.
2010 - Florida State scores 20 straight points to knock off West Virginia 33-21 in the Gator Bowl. It’s the final game of Bobby Bowden’s storied 44-year career as a head coach. Bowden finishes with a 389-129-4 record and a 33rd consecutive winning season.
2010 - Tim Tebow(notes) passes for a career-high 482 yards and three touchdowns, and runs for 51 yards and another score, as fifth-ranked Florida overwhelms No. 4 Cincinnati 51-24 in the Sugar Bowl. Tebow finishes with 533 total yards - more than anyone in Bowl Championship Series history.
2010 - Boston’s Marco Sturm caps a late comeback with an overtime goal as the Bruins beat Philadelphia 2-1 in the Winter Classic, the first NHL game at Fenway Park.
2011 - San Antonio win its fourth in a row 101-74, handing Oklahoma City its most-lopsided loss of the season. The Spurs improve to 29-4 - one of the 10 best starts in NBA history.
2011 - No. 3 TCU completes a perfect season with its first Rose Bowl victory, 21-19 over fourth-ranked Wisconsin.

1961 - George Blanda passes for three touchdowns and kicks a field goal and the extra points to give the Houston Oilers a 24-16 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in the first American Football League championship game.
1966 - Jim Taylor and Paul Hornung gain 201 yards on four inches of snow at Lambeau Field to lead the Green Bay Packers to a 23-12 victory over the Cleveland Browns and their third championship in five years.
1982 - Rolf Benirschke’s 29-yard field goal at 13:52 of overtime ends one of the wildest and highest-scoring playoff games as the San Diego Chargers beat the Miami Dolphins 41-38.
1985 - Nevada-Las Vegas beats Utah State 142-140 in triple overtime as both teams set an NCAA record for total points. The Runnin Rebels score a record 93 points in the second half, and coach Jerry Tarkanian gets his 600th victory.
1987 - No. 2 Penn State beats No. 1 Miami 14-10 in the Fiesta Bowl for the national championship.
1995 - Florida State beats Florida 23-17 in the Sugar Bowl to give coach Bobby Bowden an NCAA-record 10 consecutive bowl wins.
1996 - No. 1 Nebraska demolishes No. 2 Florida 62-24 in the Fiesta Bowl, making them the first repeat champions in 16 years.
2000 - Kurt Warner(notes) joins Dan Marino as the only quarterbacks in NFL history with 40 touchdown passes in a season, and Marshall Faulk breaks Barry Sanders’ total yardage record in the St. Louis Rams’ 38-31 loss to Philadelphia.
2001 - Jose Theodore becomes the sixth NHL goalie to score a goal in a regular-season game and stops 32 shots as Montreal blanks the New York Islanders 3-0.
2002 - Carolina’s Ron Francis becomes the fifth player in NHL history to record 500 goals and 1,000 assists when he scores in the Hurricanes’ 6-3 loss to Boston.
2005 - The Pittsburgh Steelers win their 14th straight to match the record set by Miami in 1972 and become the fourth team in NFL history to finish 15-1.
2005 - Peyton Manning(notes) shatters the single-season passer rating record by finishing the season with a 121.1 rating, well ahead of the 112.8 set by San Francisco’s Steve Young in 1994.
2009 - Mississippi beats Texas Tech 47-34 in the final Cotton Bowl played in the stadium of the same name. Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell(notes) ends up with the most career touchdowns in major college football (four in this game made it 134, breaking the record of 131 set by Hawaii’s Colt Brennan(notes)) and first player with two 5,000-yard passing seasons.
2009 - Utah finishes 13-0 with a convincing 31-17 win over No. 4 Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. The Utes are the first team from a non-BCS conference to win two BCS bowls.
2009 - Doug Weight has a pair of assists for the New York Islanders in a 5-4 loss to Phoenix to become the eighth American-born player to reach the 1,000-point mark.
2011 - Seattle becomes the first sub-.500 division champ in league history with a 16-6 win over St. Louis. The Seahawks finish as champs of the NFC West at 7-9, the first playoff team with a losing record - not counting the 1982 strike-shortened season - since the merger in 1970.

1920 - Boston Red Sox owner Harry Frazee sells pitcher-outfielder Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees for $125,000 plus a $350,000 loan. The loan is used to turn the play “No, No, Nannette” into a hit.
1931 - Nels Stewart of the Montreal Maroons scores two goals 4 seconds apart in the third period of a 5-3 victory over the Boston Bruins.
1973 - A 12-member group headed by George Steinbrenner buys the New York Yankees from the Columbia Broadcasting System for $10 million.
1991 - Wayne Gretzky scores three goals, including his 700th, as the Los Angeles Kings beat the New York Islanders 6-3.
1993 - The Buffalo Bills stage pro football’s biggest comeback to beat the Houston Oilers 41-38 in overtime in the first round of the NFL playoffs.
1995 - Nebraska, the fourth team to finish 13-0 in Division I-A football history, wins its first national football title since 1971 as the Cornhuskers are the overwhelming choice in The Associated Press poll.
1998 - Michigan wins its first national championship since 1948 as the Wolverines are officially declared No. 1 in the final Associated Press poll. The coaches poll jumps Nebraska to the No. 1 spot, creating a split national championship for the third time in the 1990s.
1999 - Brian Bellows of the Washington Capitals, has a goal and an assist, including the 1,000th point of his NHL career, to lead Washington past Toronto 5-2.
2003 - Ohio State completes an unlikely, unbeaten run to its first national title in 34 years with a 31-24 double-overtime win over Miami at the Fiesta Bowl. The Buckeyes’ upset ends the Hurricanes’ bid for a second straight title and their winning streak at 34.
2007 - No. 4 LSU helps give the Sugar Bowl an emphatic return to New Orleans with a 41-14 rout of No. 11 Notre Dame. The loss gives the Fighting Irish a record nine straight bowl losses, breaking a tie with South Carolina and West Virginia.
2010 - Chris Johnson rushes for 134 yards and two touchdowns in Tennessee’s 17-13 win over Seattle and finishes the year with 2,006 yards. He is the sixth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season.
2010 - Jamaal Charles(notes) rushes for a Chiefs-record 259 yards in Kansas City’s 44-24 win over Denver. The Broncos join the 1978 Redskins and 2003 Vikings as the only teams since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger to miss the playoffs after a 6-0 start.
2011 - Connecticut’s nearly three-year hold on the top ranking ends when they were overtaken by Baylor and drop to No. 2 in The Associated Press women’s basketball poll. Connecticut, which had its 90-game win streak snapped by Stanford on Dec. 30, had been the top team for a record 51 straight weeks, beginning Feb. 18, 2008.

1970 - The Minnesota Vikings become the first expansion team to win the NFL title by beating the Cleveland Browns 27-7 in 8-degree temperatures in Bloomington, Minn.
1970 - Kansas City’s defense, highlighted by four interceptions, three in the final quarter, carries the Chiefs to a 17-7 victory over Oakland Raiders in the last AFL title game.
1976 - The Dallas Cowboys become the first wild-card team to make it to the Super Bowl with a 37-7 rout of the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC title game.
1986 - Eric Dickerson shatters the NFL playoff record with a 248-yard rushing performance and two touchdowns to lead the Los Angeles Rams to a 20-0 win over the Dallas Cowboys.
1991 - Fu Mingxia, a 12-year-old from China, becomes the youngest world titlist in the history of any aquatic event by winning the women’s platform gold medal at the World Swimming Championships in Perth, Australia.
1992 - Mike Gartner of the New York Rangers scores his 1,000th NHL point with a power-play goal in the third period of a 6-4 loss to the New Jersey Devils.
1997 - The Jacksonville Jaguars, in their second year, beat the Broncos in Denver to advance to the AFC Championship game.
2000 - Top-ranked Florida State, the preseason No. 1, holds off Virginia Tech 46-29 in the Sugar Bowl to finish 12-0 and win the national championship. Florida State is the first team to go wire-to-wire in The Associated Press’ poll since preseason rankings began in 1950.
2002 - Michael Jordan becomes the fourth player in NBA history to score 30,000 points, reaching the milestone for the Washington Wizards in an 89-83 win over his old team, the Chicago Bulls.
2003 - Bode Miller wins his second straight World Cup giant slalom in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, to move into first place in the World Cup overall standings. It’s the first time an American man has held the overall lead since Phil Mahre in 1983.
2005 - Matt Leinart(notes) throws five touchdown passes and Southern California overwhelms Oklahoma 55-19 in the Orange Bowl. USC (13-0) is the first team to repeat as AP national champions since Nebraska in 1994-95 and joins Florida State in 1999 as the only teams to go wire-to-wire - from preseason to post bowls - as No. 1.
2006 - Second-ranked Texas ends Southern California’s 34-game winning streak, beating the two-time defending national champion 41-38 in the Rose Bowl. The Longhorns also snap USC’s record string of 33 consecutive weeks as the No. 1 team in The Associated Press Top 25. The Longhorns, a unanimous choice, win a national championship for the first time since 1969.
2010 - Boise State stuns Texas Christian in a Fiesta Bowl duel of unbeaten BCS busters. After the Broncos pull off a gutsy fake punt at their own 33, Doug Martin scores the decisive touchdown to give No. 6 Boise State a 17-10 victory over third-ranked TCU. The Broncos are the second school ever to go 14-0, joining Ohio State in 2002.

1964 - Keith Lincoln of the San Diego Chargers rushes for 206 yards in 13 carries, catches seven passes for 123 yards, completes one pass for 20 and scores two touchdowns in a 51-10 rout of the Boston Patriots for the AFL title.
1983 - In his 42nd game, Edmonton’s Wayne Gretzky scores his 100th point of the season with an assist in the Oilers’ 8-3 triumph over the Winnipeg Jets.
1991 - Kevin Bradshaw of U.S. International scores 72 points to break Pete Maravich’s NCAA Division I single-game scoring record of 69, but Loyola Marymount sets an NCAA team scoring record in defeating the Gulls 186-140.
1993 - Reggie Jackson, who hit 563 homers and played on five championship teams in 21 seasons, is the only player elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
1997 - The second-year Carolina Panthers, behind John Kasay’s(notes) four field goals, beat the Dallas Cowboys 26-17 to advance to the NFC Championship game.
1999 - Nolan Ryan, George Brett and Robin Yount are voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, the biggest class of first-time candidates since Babe Ruth and four others were chosen in the original election of 1936.
2003 - Jeff Garcia(notes) hits Tai Streets with a 13-yard touchdown pass with 1 minute left, and the New York Giants botch the snap on a 41-yard field goal attempt as time expires in San Francisco’s 39-38 victory - the second-biggest comeback in NFL playoff history.
2009 - Pittsburgh makes it to the top of The Associated Press’ men’s college basketball poll for the first time. The Panthers are one of a record nine Big East teams in the poll. The 16-team league had a record eight schools ranked for three weeks earlier in the season.

1980 - The Pittsburgh Steelers advance to their fourth Super Bowl appearance since 1974 by eliminating the Houston Oilers for the second consecutive year with a 27-13 triumph in the AFC title game.
1985 - Dan Marino passes for a record 421 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Miami Dolphins to a 45-28 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC championship game.
1994 - Nancy Kerrigan is attacked after practice at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit. Shane Stant clubs Kerrigan on the knee and flees the scene. Later that evening, Scott Davis wins the men’s U.S. Figure Skating title.
1995 - Lenny Wilkens becomes the winningest coach in NBA history as the Atlanta Hawks post a 112-90 victory over the Washington Bullets. Wilkens, with his 939th win, surpasses Red Auerbach’s record.
1999 - The NBA lockout finally ends on its 191st day after a divisive struggle that costs the owners and players hundreds of millions of dollars.
2001 - Nina Kemppel sets a record with her 15th U.S. cross-country skiing title, winning the 15-kilometer to sweep the national competition in McCall, Idaho.
2005 - For the first time in NBA history, a player leads his team in scoring without making a field goal. Detroit’s Richard Hamilton scores 14 points despite missing all 10 of his field goal attempts in a 101-79 loss to Memphis.
2010 - Andre Dawson is the lone player elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. He is one of only three players with at least 400 home runs and 300 stolen bases, joining Barry Bonds and Willie Mays.
2011 - Miami of Ohio caps a historic season with a 35-21 win over Middle Tennessee in the GoDaddy.com Bowl. The RedHawks (10-4) are the first team in Football Bowl Subdivision history to win 10 games one season after losing 10. Miami finished a dismal 1-11 in 2009, but recovers to win the Mid-American Conference title and finish this season on a six-game winning streak.

1920 - Joe Malone of Quebec scores two goals to become the NHL’s career leader with 59 and leads the Bulldogs to a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Arenas.
1925 - Harry Broadbent of the Montreal Maroons scores five goals in a 6-2 triumph over Hamilton.
1972 - The Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Atlanta Hawks 134-90 for their 33rd straight victory, an NBA record.
1979 - The Pittsburgh Steelers win their third AFC championship by beating the Houston Oilers 34-5 in a cold, steady rain at Three Rivers Stadium.
1981 - Marcel Dionne of the Los Angeles Kings scores his 1,000th point with a goal in a 5-3 triumph over the Hartford Whalers.
1987 - Gary Bossert of Niagara sets an NCAA record by hitting 12 of 14 3-point shots, including 11 straight, against Siena.
1992 - Pitchers Tom Seaver and Rollie Fingers are elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Seaver receives the highest percentage of votes in baseball history.
1997 - Rutgers-Camden snaps its NCAA-record 117-game losing streak with a 77-72 victory over Bloomfield College. The Division III Pioneers were winless since beating Ramapo 74-73 on Jan. 18, 1992.
2003 - Kobe Bryant makes an NBA-record 12 shots from 3-point range, including nine straight, in scoring 45 points as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Seattle SuperSonics 119-98.
2004 - Brian Boucher becomes the first NHL goalie in almost 55 years to record four consecutive shutouts, making 27 saves in the Phoenix Coyotes’ 3-0 victory over Washington.
2006 - The New England Patriots set an NFL mark with 10 straight postseason victories by beating the Jacksonville Jaguars 28-3. New England’s milestone surpasses the nine straight playoff victories by Green Bay in the 1960s.
2007 - Coach Phil Jackson gets his 900th NBA victory as the Los Angeles Lakers defeat Dallas 101-98. Jackson is the fastest to reach 900, doing so in 1,264 games.
2008 - Second-ranked LSU turns the BCS national championship game into a horrible replay for No. 1 Ohio State. Matt Flynn(notes) throws four touchdown passes in a 38-24 win. LSU (12-2) becomes the first two-loss team to play for the title and wins its second BCS crown in five seasons.
2010 - Alabama knocks Texas quarterback Colt McCoy(notes) out of the BCS title game early, and goes on to a 37-21 victory for the Crimson Tide’s first national title since 1992.
2011 - Rookie Luke Harangody has career highs with 17 points and 11 rebounds for his first NBA double-double, and the Boston Celtics earn the 3,000th victory in franchise history, beating the Toronto Raptors 122-102.
