Do you feel the Cowboys could trade out of the first round? And who's number 1 on their draft board?
Hey guys, as you've seen I love the draft and am willing to take any of your questions on this year's NFL draft. You can post them here and I'll try to get here as often as possible and answer them. Also on draft day be sure to visit the site often, because we'll have a write up on each player the Cowboys pick, as well as a general summary of the Cowboys activity on that day. We know you can't watch every pick so I do it for you.

Wondering what your take is on Taylor Mays the safety out of USC. I've seen a few Mocks so far showing the Cowboys getting him at 27. Seems to me through reading about him and seeing some clips that he's more like a Roy Williams type safety, hits like a truck but suffers in coverage. I think that would be a step in the wrong direction. I think we need cover guys and playmakers who won't let the "Big Play" happen down the field. Not so worried about the punishing hits from the safety position. I loved seeing Roy run someone over but once the league started taking advantage of his coverage problems I cared less and less about the big hit.
I can't say for sure who'd be number 1 on the Cowboys board. I would assume an offensive lineman, or if by some chance Earl Thomas fell to them. If they feel they can get good value trading out it would certainly be something to look at. However, after not having a high pick last year I'm not sure that would be a good call. At some point you will need to pick a front line player.
Taylor Mays...I could write for days about this guy. I'm very interested in seeing his pro career, but wouldn't want to see him in Dallas. On paper he looks to be the perfect prospect, but on film he's lackluster. I say stay away...I don't want any part of this guy.

I have a feeling whoever they draft will hopefully be an immediate impact for the season. I don't forsee Jerry spending first round money on a player that will ultimately sit on the bench this season. So if Jerry doesn't trade out of the first round, I have a feeling that player will be implimented rather quickly. The Cowboys do have a need at O-line, but I have a feeling that if they draft in the first round, they'll draft a position that can fill in immediately. An O-lineman can take some time to develope. That is to be said about any player in any position, but some are easier to adjust than others. I'm certainly not a mock draft expert, but it wouldn't surprise me if they draft an O-lineman in the 2nd or 3rd round, while drafting either a safety or a linebacker in the first round (should they not trade out).
I agree with you to a point, but if Earl Thomas isn't there, then in my opinion there isn't a guy there worth taking. Same thing for linebacker, unless they can find and inside guy they like enough. Brandon Spikes could fall there. Pouncey is a guy who could step in right away, probably wouldn't but is good enough to. He may be the best overall offensive lineman in the draft.

I know this wont concern the cowboys, but what round do you see Tebow going? i thought 2nd to 3rd but i heard on ESPN that he had a good performance at Florida's Pro-Day, so i was wondering how that affected his draft value?
Haven't seen much from Tim Tebow's pro day, but what I've heard is he impressed enough to get an invite to the draft. In my opinion, if you want to see Tebow's career look at Alex Smith (49ers) right now. Even changing his delivery isn't enough if he can't produce the right footwork, take snaps from center, and prove he can make multi read throws. It may be that we watch him sit through 2 rounds in the green room if he shows up. Keep an eye on a team like The Patriots who may use him for wildcard purposes. Buffalo is taken a bit with him and has a private workout scheduled for him. Will be an interesting story on draft day.
Which brings me to draft day, I'm a total draft nerd so be sure to check in on the site as I'll be writing things throughout the day including complete breakdowns on each Cowboy draft pick.
Has there ever been a time when a draft prospect was invited to the draft and then not taken in the first round. It almost happened to Aaron Rodgers a few years back. But that would be really embarrasing I think. If the NFL is inviting him to attend then I am assuming they have a pretty good feeling that someone will take him in the first round.
It's mindblowing to me they invited him to the draft. I don't know how they would know someone would take him because I can't believe they got anyone to go on record and say that. Brady Quinn and Aaron Rodgers are notable guys who sat around on draft day in the green room. I'd have to do some research to see if anyone has ever fallen out of the first round. Don't be surprised if he declines to attend due to the fact that he may not go early. It's truly one of the craziest things I've seen.

What about Colt McCoy? I thought he would possibly go to the Cardinals, but since they secured Derek Anderson in FA (and will probably have a QB controversy between him and Matt Leinart), I highly doubt Colt McCoy will go there. Maybe Buffalo, Miami, or Tampa Ba?. Or maybe even Saint Louis (if they don't take Bradford).
I can't see St Louis not taking Bradford. That said, if they don't look for them to take a look at Colt. Tampa would be out based on Josh Freeman and how they feel about him. Keep an eye on Buffalo, Seattle, and Washington (if they don't take a quarterback). Also keep an eye on the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts run a similar system to Texas and head coach Jim Caldwell has been down in Austin a lot recently. The Colts also cut ties with backup Jim Sorgi. I know they have Peyton, but if Colt were to slide to them in the 2nd round or even the 3rd they may take him as a backup and someone to groom for the future.
One more interesting possibility is Colt jumping up to the late first round is Minnesota. Obviously the situation with Favre is Tenuous and without a proven future guy they may go with someone like Colt there.

Just watched ESPN's On The Clock: Cowboys
They saw the needs as OL, safety, kicker (Garret Hartley was key in Saints SB win) and rather suprisingly WR,specifically mentioning Shipley. All of this was in the context of what the Cowboys need to do in order to be the first to host SB in their stadium.

I think there is definitely a need at WR, so much so, that if Dez Bryant is there in the first you take him no question.
As for Shipley, take it from a guy who's seen every game he's played you will love him and he is exactly waht the Cowboys need. He's a slot guy who exploits mismatches, has flypaper hands, run crisps routes and helps you out in the return game. Forget his 40 at the combine, anyone who has seen Shipley play knows he plays faster than he runs. If you want to move forward out of the Roy Williams Era, then you could go forward with Austin and Ogletree wide, with Crayton and Shipley as your inside guys. That gives you another year to try Roy Williams while Jordan Shipley learns and Romo could rely on shipley much of the way Colt McCoy did.
I'm not big on taking a kicker in the draft. Aside from Mason Crosby who I can think of off the top of my head, name me another guy who's a franchise kicker taken in the draft. Garrett Hartley was an undrafted guy, and there will be those guys out there. May I suggest Hunter Lawrence of Texas? That guy really came on this year and if you can get him after the draft he would be someone to try. Anyone who saw the Big XII Championship game knows that guy can nail kicks under pressure. If you didn't then here's some help.
